American
War, Baguio was selected to become the summer capital of the Philippine
Islands. In 1903, Filipino, Japanese and Chinese workers were hired to When the
Americans took possession of the Philippines after the Spanish-build Kennon
Road, the first road directly connecting Baguio with the lowlands of
Pangasinan. Before this, the only road to Benguet was Naguilian Road, and it
was largely a horse trail at higher elevations.
The
Americans declared Baguio the "Summer Capital of the Philippines" on
July 1, 1903. Every year between March and June, the entire American government
transferred operations Baguio to escape Manila's summer heat, a practise
abolished in 1913 when Governor-General Francis B. Harrison took office.
Mansion House was built to become the residence of the Governor-General, while
in 1904 the rest of the city was planned out by the American architect Daniel
Burnham, one of the earliest successful modern city planners. On September 1,
1909 Baguio was declared a chartered city, the second after the City of Manila,
and the period after saw further development of Baguio with the construction of
Wright Park in honor of Governor-General Luke E. Wright, Burnham Park in honour
of Burnham, Governor Pack Road, and Session Road.

The
Igorot Garden is one of the busiest spots in the city, mainly because of its
location. From this small park, you will find yourself only a few meters
away from some of the most popular destinations within Baguio such as hotels
and inns like Hotel Veniz and Harrison Holiday Inn; recreational facilities,
like the Melvin Jones Football Grounds, Rose Garden and the ever-famous Burnham
Lake local diners, like Solibao Restaurant, Veniz Grill, the New Ganza and
Danes Bakeshop and of course shopping centers like Tiong San Harrison, Sunshine
Supermart, Abanao Square, the Maharlika Livelihood Center, the City Public
Market, the Bayanihan Wagwagan and the recently-launched Baguio Night Market.

the first known hero of the Philippines, Datu Lapu-Lapu was a chieftain of
Mactan who fought against the Spaniards and Ferdinand Magellan. On the morning
of April 27, 1521, dATU Lapu-Lapu led 1,500 Mactan warriors armed with barong,
spears, kampilan, and kalasag, in a battle against Portuguese explorer and
conquistador Ferdinand Magellan who led a force of forty-nine Spanish soldiers
armed with guns in what would later be known as the Battle of Mactan. It was in
this battle that Datu Lapu-Lapu killed Ferdinand Magellan with a kampilan and
thus prevented the on coming of Spanish colonization for several years as well
as the completion of Magellan’s voyage completely around the world.
